Over the years, we’ve spent countless hours testing, measuring and hitting with composite wood bats. We think the best composite wood bat is either the Baum or the Brett Bros. However, bats like DeMarini’s DX series as well as Mizuno’s Bamboo Carbon Composite are with a look too.
We updated this list in the summer of 2022 as we reevaluated the Baum Axe handle bat as well as considered the data collected over the course of the last season.

Although it feels cliche and overhyped, we still think the Baum composite is the best. We can’t tell much difference between the white and gold-labeled ones, so go with the cheaper (white) if you can. The bats are good, last a lifetime, and might be the only thing you buy in the baseball equipment world where you can resell at a much later date for about what you paid. If you are looking for the best composite wood bat, there isn’t a soul in the country who can honestly think you didn’t choose well if you go Baum.

This might be the easiest of all the rankings we’ve ever done. The best composite wood bat is the Brett Bros. Maple/Bamboo Wood BBCOR bat. This is a 110 turn (meaning the shape of the bat is for balance) and feels great for a wood bat. I know a lot of folks want a great wood bat for under $100, and there are some limited options, but if you want the best bang for your buck int he wood bat space, they look real close at this Bret Bros Maple Composite wood bat which you can usually pick up at JustBats for right under $100.

DeMarini has a few good composite wood bats they run through their line they refer to as DX. They have three models with different turns (or shapes). The 271, 243, and 110. Each of these corresponds to your other wood bat turn models. These DX model composite wood bats from DeMarini are similar to the Baum in that they are tough to break. They are BBCOR certified and allowed in most leagues that also allow wood (but make sure before you pull the trigger). These bats also have the advantage of good distribution. Baum doesn’t put their bats everywhere (or anywhere), but you can find DeMarini’s DX series of bats at brick-and-mortar stores like Dicks Sporting goods or big online retailers like Closeoutbats or Just bats.

A composite wood bat is helpful for a few groups of players.
Composite wood bats are a category of bats made from wood parts. These wood parts are often reinforced by composite (plastic) parts.
These wood parts might include entire strips of wood or the sawdust from the wood shavings glued together. Often, these composite wood bats are made from only one type of tree, so that you can find Maple, Birch, or Ash composite wood bats.
The right composite wood bat is, foremost, the right size composite wood bat. Most composite wood bats swing heavy, so sizing down an inch from your alloy/composite gamer might be prudent. In any case, getting the right size should be the most important thing on your list. Get the right size before you get the ‘best’ model.
