Rawlings VELO

Velo Reviews

The Rawlings VELO is one of the longest-running bat lines in the baseball space. Its origins are pre BBCOR days and it’s never really left its roots as a single piece aluminum with a light swing.

They’ve added technology to extend a composite end cap into the barrel and, occasionally, some refer to more recent versions of the Velo as a hybrid. Traditionally speaking, though, the bat is a single-piece aluminum. We’ve hit this bat since its BBCOR inception and have our reviews below.

We hit every bat we review. That includes our Rawlings Velo reviews below, too.

2020 Rawlings VELO ACP Review

Best USA Bat 8 Year Old

Last Updated: November 9, 2020 | by Bat Digest Review Team | @BatDigest

2020 Rawlings VELO ACP Review: as iconic as any bat in the non-wood bat space, the 2020 Velo is a light swing, loud sound and newly designed end cap. Our favorite version, after hitting every one, is the uniuqe drop 5 USSSA Velo which swings lighter than many drop 8 bats. It’s a great choice for the little guy forced to use big bats. The BBCOR version will do well with a newly designed end cap (which made no difference in our exit speeds). The USA version in a drop 11 still struggled to impress.

Quick VELO ACP Review

As has been the case for the last several years, our hitters like the light swing and loud ping of the 2020 Rawlings VELO ACP. The new end cap has driven down the swing weight a bit from previous years (2 to 3%) and it feels great if you can barrel it up. Of course, like always, single piece bats will ring your hands if you miss it. But, the stiff nature of the bat, loud sound and reasonably sized barrel can drill some balls if you square it up.

2020 VELO ACP Model Tips

The idea 2020 Velo ACP hitter, in our mind, is two types of players. First is the newer and younger player looking for as much bat speed as possible whose parents would rather not get a second mortgage to buy a bat. The Velo feels great and can hit the ball as far as any other performance bat on the market at a fraction of the cost. The other type of hitter who will like the Velo is a relatively big hitting high school player that likes a stiff feel and really wants to maximize his reach at the plate with a 33 or 34-inch BBCOR. Those aren’t the only two types of players who will like the Velo ACP for 2020, but those are the exact type of hitters that gravitate towards it.

2020 Rawlings VELO ACP Review

As has been the case for several years, the Velo is a good bat for the smaller kid that needs as much help in the bat speed department as possible and doesn't mind the hand sting. Throw in a budget that isn't willing to break the bank and you have a solid choice. As well, the 2020 VELO ACP in BBCOR is a fantastic choice for the bigger hitter who really wants to get that 34-inch length in and can swing it hard. Some of the better hitters we see all year, in terms of strength and form, love the Velo for its hot out of the wrapper performance, stiffness through the zone and long reach it provides at a marginal swing weight cost.

2020 Rawlings VELO ACP Review

The USSSA Velo series is an above average bat. For the price point and construction type it does well although it competes with a very popular Slugger Solo and Omaha as well as the more expensive Marucci CAT 8 series of bats---all of which are more popular than the USSSA Velo. But, in terms of a light swing at a reasonable price point its a solid choice. We are big fans of the drop 5 USSSA Velo ACP for the same reason we like bigger, stronger kids in the longer BBCOR versions. If you are in the market for a Slugger Solo and want to make a steal of a deal look for an older model USSSA Velo in the same drop. They swing the same, have the same tech in the end cap and get very similar reviews. It's possible you'll save a pretty penny with this approach.

2020 Rawlings VELO ACP Review

The USA market is so new and fluid its hard to pin down the right choice for everyone. Like in USA, the drop 11 USA VELO is outmached by the USA Slugger Solo in a drop 11. The CAT 8 in a drop 10 is a bit more popular than the VELO drop 10. In a drop 5 it gets beat out by the aluminum barreled Axe Elite. However, note, it competes in each of those categories---which makes the Velo such a popular choice. It has so many decent options that it is bound to float to the plate in any game you can find. In any event, we think aluminum barrels are generally the way to go for most USA players this early in the standard. That may change one day, but picking up a drop 11, 10 or 5 Velo for that light swing and top performance from swing one is a legitimate and reasonable approach to 2020 USA bat buying.

Best Baseball Bat Guides

After recording several hitter’s experience with the 2019 Rawlings Velo, we write this review.

Velo

In short, hitters liked the light swing, loud sound and trusted name of the 2019 Velo. A few did not like the hand sting and smaller barrel size. We’d recommend the bat to those who want a traditional feeling stiff bat with a light swing and a loud sound. Jump to our Full Review

Quick Velo Review

In short, hitters liked the light swing, loud sound and trusted name of the 2019 Velo. A few did not like the hand sting and smaller barrel size. We’d recommend the bat to those who want a traditional feeling stiff bat with a light swing and a loud sound. Exit speeds looked good but the bat lacked the swing weight to be considered a fireball. But, it swings well and a good hitter can make this work fine.

2019 Velo Model Tips

On the whole, we recommend the bat for those looking for a single piece aluminum bat with a light swing. The BBCOR versions as well as the lower drops (like 5) felt between decent and good even on mishit balls. The lighter swinging bats (like the drop 10 USA) definitely delivered some hand sting on mishit balls–especially if the swing speed and pitch speed was fast.

2019 Rawlings Velo Review

We think the BBCOR Velo the best of the bunch. The price point is right where a lot of parents are willing to pay. Several hitters like the stiff feel and the light swing. This is a perfect BBCOR bat for those in the middle to the end of the lineup who'd like to add some power to their swing that needs as much speed as possible. The stiff bat will deliver a good pop if you can square one up. The drop 3 nature of the bat will make most hits feel decent. A highly recommended entry level BBCOR bat.

2019 Rawlings Velo Review

The USSSA Velo is likely the least exciting. It feels real basic and tends to lack considerable pop that you'd hope for in the USSSA space. That said, we really liked the drop 5. Those hitters looking for a big boy's bat but still play in leagues that allow USSSA 1.15 BPF bats might really get a kick out of the drop 5 Velo. The drop 10 leaves room to be desired.

2019 Rawlings Velo Review

The drop 5 and drop 10 USA Velo are recommendable but, you should note, their swing weights are HEAVY. They swing 10% heavier than the lighter bats in the drop 10 space like the Rawlings Quatro or CF Zen. We liked the feel of the drop 5 more than the drop 10 but that's because we are pretty sensitive (in cold weather) to hand sting. In 2018 there was a late release drop 11 and we struggled to like it. It was just too light, but we haven't seen the drop 11 in 2019 yet. Possibly later in the season?

2018 Rawlings VELO Review

We used the 2018 BBCOR version of the bat in a few tournaments across several different players with nearly unanimous approval. Our hitters like the loud sound, light swing, and real stiff feel. Some hitters didn’t think it had the power of some other bats, but our exit speeds showed differently. They preferred the grip on the Velo over most bats.

2018 Velo Model Tips

The 2018 Rawlings VELO is made for hitters that want a single piece feel and a light swing. Most light swing hitters like the feel of two-piece bats and most heavy hitters prefer a heavier swing. But, if you’re one of the many who like a stiff feel but still prefer a light swing than the 2018 Rawlings VELO is a legitimate choice. You can expect great durability, too.

2018 Rawlings Velo Review

Although terribly difficult to measure, the Rawlings BBCOR line of bats may be the most popular BBCOR bats in the country. And among them, the VELO is the most popular bat Rawlings makes. As such, it could be argued, the VELO is the most popular BBCOR bat on the market.

Price Check
2018 Rawlings Velo Review

The USSSA bats work well for those who want a low swing weight, distinctly loud sound at contact, a price point in line with what many parents are more willing to pay. As well, the bat is hot out of the wrapper---so no questioning whether the bat is broken in and an an impressively long a pedigree as any bat in the BBCOR space.

Price Check
2018 Rawlings Velo Review

We liked the drop 5 and 10 VELO. We felt the drop 11 lacked enough gumption to make a difference in the box---and its light weight lends to more hand sting. Otherwise, the Drop 5 especially, hits the ball well and is a stiff bat made for serious players that want a wood like feel and performance in a youth bat.

2017 Velo Model Tips

The 2016 Velo is the same as expected. It’s a single piece bat with a stiff feel and light swing. It hasn’t changed much before or since. The bat is a pretty basic stick built for the hitter who believes the best hitters don’t need the latest and greatest. It’s a durable bat with a light swing and a good-sized barrel. Not the most exciting bat you could but, but a great one nonetheless.

2017 Rawlings Velo Review

We'd recommend the VELO to any player who prefers an aluminum barreled bat with its hot out of the wrapper functionality*. That player, we would also suggest, should appreciate a light swing weight per barrel size. The VELO receives near universal positive feedback on pop effect at different pitch speeds. At least as well as any bat on the market. As such, from little league to college ball the VELO is a very popular bat.

As we discuss below, the VELO has one iteration as a drop 12 two piece composite bat. For this reason, the VELO Composite, as it is called, wouldn't be a good fit for those who like the loud ping associated with VELO and/or prefer an aluminum barrel.2017 VELO Sizing & Type Options

2016 Rawlings VELO Review

We spent a good amount of time in the cage and on the field with the 2016 VELO. Our 9 year old player, who weighs right at 65 pounds, fell in love with the 2016 VELO drop 12 2 3/4 two piece composite.

The 30/18 has a respectable size barrel and the added weight in the hands increased his contact percentage remarkably when compared to similarly-sized, yet end-loaded bats like the 2016 Voodoo Raw.

2016 Velo Model Tips

The VELO clearly lacks some jaw-dropping power that can be found in other sticks (like the Rawlings 5150) but for many hitters the name of the game is getting the ball in play, not sending it out of play.

2016 Rawlings Velo Review

Regardless of the class of bat (BBCOR, Senior League, Big Barrel, etc.) the VELO ranks as a remarkably light swinging baseball bat.

2015 Velo Model Tips

The 2015 Rawlings Velo end-loaded version is the same exact exterior shell as the hand-loaded version of the bat but its internal weight is distributed more towards the end cap. From a measurement standpoint, it weighs in as one of the lighter ‘end-loaded’ bats for 2015. Not nearly as heavy to swing as Easton’s XL1 but with a little more drag than Baden’s Axe Avenge.

2015 Rawlings Velo Review

The 2015 Rawlings Velo hand loaded version (BBRVB) is a durable and proven bat from a great company with a solid warranty. Those looking for a hand loaded bat should start real close to here--if not exactly here.

The only caution we submit is that the 2015 is exactly the same as the 2013 and 2014 versions (with the exception of the paint job). Those who think the Rawlings Velo is the right bat from them should try and find a 2014 or 2013 version like maybe here? If you want brand new then here is a good place to start looking.
